Native to western Asia and Europe, fenugreek is an herbal medicinal treatment derived from the Trigonella foenum-graecum plant. Traditionally, fenugreek has been used to stimulate milk production in lactating women. If you plan to take this supplement while nursing your baby, talk with your doctor about the side effects of fenugreek before beginning treatment.
Upset Stomach
Fenugreek supplements may irritate your digestive tract -- especially if you take more than 100g of fenugreek seeds daily. Stomach discomfort may result in bloating, gas or diarrhea, which may contribute to a temporary decrease in your appetite. Chronic diarrhea may be accompanied by abdominal cramping or pain and may also increase your risk of becoming dehydrated. Though stomach discomfort may occur at any time during fenugreek treatment, such side effects may be particularly bothersome while you are nursing your baby. Additionally, you may notice that your baby also develops stomach upset or colic if you take fenugreek while nursing. Seek care from your medical professional if stomach discomfort persists or becomes severe.
Urine Changes
Changes in your urine may occur as a consequence of taking fenugreek to stimulate milk production while nursing your baby. Your urine may appear unusually dark in color and may emit a smell similar to that of maple syrup. While nursing, you may also pass fenugreek to your infant. Consequently, these urine changes may also affect your baby. If such side effects arise, let your doctor know. These urine changes may also be signs of an alternate metabolic health condition called "maple syrup urine disease."
Allergic Reaction
Though rare, an allergic reaction may occur following treatment with fenugreek. Allergy reaction symptoms, such as hives, weakness, breathing difficulties or facial swelling, may affect both you and your nursing baby. Seek emergency medical care if you or your infant exhibits any symptoms of an allergic reaction. A severe allergic reaction may induce life-threatening medical complications.
Contraindications
Always inform your doctor of any health concerns or problems you may have before taking fenugreek supplements -- especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Fenugreek treatment should be avoided if you are pregnant, as this supplement may stimulate uterine contraction and may induce premature labor. If you have a pre-existing bleeding disorder or diabetes, do not take fenugreek without first consulting your doctor. This herbal treatment may cause blood clotting problems or may lower your blood sugar.
