Aqua aerobics or aqua fitness is a popular form of exercise. It is a gentle but effective form of fitness that involves exercising with flotation devices while immersed in a swimming pool. It is suitable for all ages and even those suffering from disorders such as arthritis. There are a varaiety of organizations throughout the United States that offer certification in aqua fitness.

Aqua Fitness Benefits

If you are a fitness or swimming instructor, you may want to consider adding a certification in aqua fitness. It will allow you to teach classes in aqua aerobics. Water-based exercise reduces body weight by 90 percent, which means it reduces impact on the joints, decreases joint and muscle stress, improves posture and balance, increases flexibility and reduces the risk of strain or injury.

The Aquatic Education Association

The Aquatic Education Association, or AEA, offers a practical examination leading to certification as an aquatic fitness professional. The exam costs $145, as of February 2011, and can be taken at facilities throughout the United States. Requirements for the examination include familiarity with the AEA Aquatic Fitness Professional Manual, a minimum six months of practical experience as an apprentice in classes led by qualified aquatic fitness professionals and participation in the online AEA Online Prep Course.

The Aquatic & Fitness Professional Association International

The Aquatic & Fitness Professional Association International provides workshops and distance learning classes throughout the United States. Their courses include water aerobics, aquatic personal training, aquatic kickboxing, aquatic bench step, senior aquatic fitness and arthritis aquatic fitness. Course prices range from $175 to $250, as of February 2011. The courses require recertification every two years.

The Aerobics and Fitness Association of America

The Aerobics and Fitness Association of America provides a one-day workshop for professional fitness instructors. The cost is $129, as of February 2011. The course incorporates up-to-date research on resistance and cardiovascular effects of exercise in water, and covers the essentials of water aerobics, including teaching in the water and from the deck, the effects of buoyancy and resistance, and how to design an exercise program.
