Attending your first yoga class may seem intimidating, especially when you feel inexperienced in a class of seemingly professional yogis. Even if you don't know all the poses, you can at least look the part by choosing the best yoga clothing for the particular type of yoga class you plan to attend. Yoga clothes that work well for Hatha yoga may not be appropriate for Bikram yoga, so ensure that you have a class description so you can dress appropriately for a comfortable and effective class.
Tops
The best yoga tops are those that show your form and posture. While you may be used to exercising in oversized T-shirts, yoga class is no place for baggy clothes. Without the benefit of a tighter shirt, your yoga instructor may not be able to see your form and posture properly to ensure that you're completing the poses properly. Look for tank tops and tight T-shirts made from athletic performance material to help wick away sweat.
Bottoms
When it comes to the best types of yoga bottoms, the answer correlates with the type of yoga you prefer. Hatha yoga, the type of yoga most often practiced by beginners, can be practiced in long pants or leggings, as long as your legs are clearly visible to your instructor. If you prefer Bikram or Ashtanga yoga, the less clothing, the better. Ashtanga yoga is practiced in quick succession and is high impact, so you may not want long, flared pants to inhibit your movement. In Bikram yoga, you'll be in a studio of up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit and will become hot and sweaty throughout class. Small bike shorts are usually best.
Footwear
In general, the best way to practice yoga is in your bare feet. Staying barefoot helps to encourage proper posture and stability when in difficult poses. If, for some reason, you cannot practice yoga barefoot, wear yoga socks, which are thin with a gripping sole. Practicing on a sticky mat can also give you better traction and balance. Otherwise, plan to leave your shoes at the door and spend the duration of your class in the best footwear possible -- your own feet.
Undergarments and Accessories
Proper undergarments are key in keeping you cool and comfortable while in class. For women, choose a supportive sports bra. When practicing Bikram yoga, your sports bra may be your top of choice to help keep you cool. Wear breathable underwear to enhance air circulation to stay comfortable.
When you go to your first yoga class, it's best to keep you accessories and clothing as minimal as possible. Bring along your mat, a water bottle and any equipment your teacher has instructed your to bring. Straps, resistance bands and pillows are often provided by the studio.
