Softball is a sport played across the country both competitively and recreationally by kids, women and men. Softball typically takes the form of either fastpitch or slowpitch, with the speed of the pitches being the main difference between the two. A pitch in slowpitch softball travels on a slow arc, while many fastpitch softball pitches rival professional baseball in terns of velocity. Just as in baseball, softball requires several pieces of equipment in order to conduct a game and play safely.

Bats and Balls

Both bats and balls are required to play either fastpitch or slowpitch softball. A slowpitch bat has a slightly thinner barrel than a regular baseball bat, and is gradually tapered from the handle up to the barrel. The fastpitch bat looks more like a bottle, with not much taper and a larger hitting area. The balls used for slowpitch softball are 11-inches in diameter, while fastpitch balls are 9-inches. A softball is just as hard as a real baseball, and softer practice balls are available for children.

Batting Helmets

The batting helmet is not always mandatory in slowpitch softball leagues, but it is a necessity in fastpitch softball. Helmets have flaps covering the ears and protect the batter's head while at the plate and running the bases. A batting helmet should fit snugly on your head, so it doesn't move around too much but doesn't feel tight.

Gloves

Softball gloves vary in size and quality, and the best idea is to sample difference styles and sizes until you find one that is comfortable on your hand. Catchers and first basemen typically use a "mitt" style glove with rounded edges, no fingers inside and extra padding. Infielder and outfielder gloves each have finger holes inside. An outfielder's glove is larger than an infielder's glove to have more surface area for catching fly balls.

Catcher's Gear

A catcher doesn't always wear the standard catcher's gear in a slowpitch softball game, but fastpitch catchers must be fully equipped. Catcher's gear consists of shin pads, a chest protector and a mask. The pads are designed to cover your knees and shins, with most having an extra flap that extends over the top of your feet. The chest protector covers your chest and abdomen, and a mask protects your face. Adjust your catcher's mask with the straps on the back so it covers all areas of your face.
