An online karate certification is a vital step to become a karate instructor. Online classes are generally less expensive that attending school in person. A certification is a requirement for opening your own studio. Although online certifications are cheaper, it is advised that you compare them with traditional certifications through colleges to determine which is most appropriate for you.

Function

Karate certifications are designed for seasoned karate trainees that are interested in teaching the art to others. The American Martial Arts Certified Professionals, an online certification outlet, requires that you have two years of experience in karate or another type of martial arts training. You must have a black belt or be close to earning one. Certifications are not given to hobbyists or karate newcomers.

Types

There are different certification levels based on your experience in karate training and current education level. For example, the United States Council of Martial Arts Standards offers four types of karate certificates: Certified Instructor, Certified Senior Instructor, Certified Head Instructor and Certified Master Instructor. To obtain a Master Instructor certification, your rank must be at least a 7th Dan. Certification is also appropriate for current karate instructors that want to gain more education in their field. During the certification process, you will take classes and subsequent tests. Students learn the history of karate as well as nutrition for trainees and techniques such as salutations, kicking and hand strikes.

Benefits

A karate certification adds credibility as an instructor, especially if you are new and trying to recruit your first students. Even if you are a seasoned karate student, you will learn more facts and techniques through the certification process. Plus, having a karate certification gives you access to a group of other certified professionals with whom you can exchange industry information.

Considerations

Online karate certifications are appropriate for students who are good at distance learning. Distance learning does not require the need to get out of the house and go to a school, but still requires discipline. Some students procrastinate when taking classes online and have difficulties managing their time. If you are not a candidate for distance learning, then obtaining a karate certification online may not be right for you. Some students may retain more information by attending classes in person. For example, topics such as stances and kicks are better learned in-person than online. Some universities offer degree programs in karate and martial arts. Consider attending school prior to obtaining a certification. This will provide you with a well-rounded education and possibly make you a more credible instructor.
