Qi gong, also known as chi kung, is an ancient Chinese practice. It combines fluid, rhythmical, graceful movements in different postures, deep diaphragmatic breathing, and mental focus to facilitate the flow of chi, or energy, through the body. This brings harmony and balance to the mind, body and soul and is purported to have healing benefits.
Step 1
Stand in a comfortable pose. Inhale deeply, then exhale. Do not try to control your breathing pattern. Do not pause between breaths. Breath continuously and rapidly using either your nose or mouth, but not both. You may begin to feel a tingling in your fingers and toes and a sense of exhilaration. Ease down on your breathing if you feel uncomfortable. This circular breathing technique dissipates and expels energy accumulated from various emotions and tensions.
Step 2
Stand with your left hand placed over your right hand. Place your right hand on your belly, slightly below your navel. Inhale through your nose and direct your breath down to the area just below your navel, known as the tan tien area. Focus on the tan tien area and feel your breath energy fill your lower abdomen. Exhale slowly and feel all tension and toxins leave your body through your breath as your belly contracts. Do not force the breath out. Focus your awareness and feel the remaining breath and energy in your lower abdomen diffuse into your cells and body. Do this for a few minutes.
Step 3
Lie flat on your back with your knees bent on a comfortable surface. Focus on your breathing pattern for a couple of minutes. Rub your hands together until they are warm. Place your left hand over your right and place your right hand over your navel. You may notice your belly expands as you inhale and retract as you exhale. If this does not happen, rub your hands together until they are warm then massage your belly particularly around your navel. This should relax your belly. Rub your hands together, and place them on your belly as before. Relax and watch how your belly responds to your breathing. If your belly is tight, push down with your hands as you exhale. Gently release the pressure as you inhale. Your belly should now expand and retract with your breathing. Breathe in this fashion for a few minutes and note how warmth, comfort and energy flow from your belly to other parts of your body.
