Your toddler needs daily physical activity, as well as plenty of activities to aid in mental stimulation and development. Sure, you take breaks to read, cuddle and play with toys, but make sure your little one is getting plenty of exercise as well. Put that boundless energy to good use with some fun, easy physical activities that can help your toddler start an exercise habit that will last his whole life.
Dance to Music
Toddlers love music, and they love to dance. Let your little one shake, boogie, move and groove to any kind of music, whether kid-friendly tunes or your favorite songs. Twirl, spin, bounce, dance and sing together, being silly and active at the same time. An impromptu dance party is a great way to blow off a little steam and get some exercise in while you have a good time together.
Play in the Yard
If the weather is nice, head outside to play in the yard. Swing, slide and climb if you have a swing set for your little one. Play a game of tag, toss a baseball or football, or let your toddler try his hand at shooting hoops on a toddler-sized toy basketball goal. You can also go for a walk, head to the park or take the dog out for a jaunt.
Teaching and Moving
Invent games that get your little one up and moving. Along with your child, try touching your toes, jumping up and down, skipping and twirling in circles, and stretching your arms up above your head. Pretend to be an airplane, a racehorse or a car.
Obstacle Course
Send your child on an exciting adventure that will also give him a little exercise and also keep his attention. Create an obstacle course or maze out of pillows, blocks, tents, boxes or anything you have lying around the house. Let your child climb, jump, run and wind his way around the maze.
