The vagina normally is colonized by the fungi Candida albicans. In some cases this yeast can grow too much, resulting in a yeast infection. One way to treat or prevent yeast infections is to increase the amount of healthy bacteria present in your body. The bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus are often used for this purpose.
Yeast Infection Symptoms
One of the most common symptoms of a yeast infection is itching in and around the vagina, WomensHealth.gov notes. The vagina and vulva may also become red, sore and swollen. Other symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection are pain when peeing or having sex and the appearance of a thick white vaginal discharge with no notable smell. Approximately 75 percent of all women will develop a yeast infection at some point in their lives.
Acidophilus
Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria are a form of bacteria that does not cause any symptoms of an infection. As a result, these bacteria can be used to treat or prevent some infections because they can help crowd out other organisms, such as Candida albicans. In addition, these bacteria are able to produce some vitamins and also some compounds which can help fight off infections. According to MayoClinic.com, several studies in humans have found these bacteria to be effective at combating yeast infections.
Dosing
Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria can be consumed orally for the treatment of yeast infections. You can consume yogurt which contains these bacteria, the University of Maryland Medical Center notes. Just 8 oz. of yogurt with these "active" or "live" cultures should be eaten each day. Alternately you can take supplements with these bacteria; for treating a yeast infection, you should try to consume a supplement with 1 to 2 billion live organisms. Lactobacillus acidophilus supplements can also be inserted directly into the vagina.
Considerations
Lactobacillus acidophilus supplements generally do not cause any side effects when taken properly. Some people do develop symptoms such as gas, bloating and abdominal discomfort, though these symptoms usually subside if you continue consuming the bacteria. You should be careful about taking Lactobacillus acidophilus supplements if you have a weakened immune system due to chemotherapy, an organ transplant or some other medical condition. Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria can also infect your heart valves, particularly if you have an artificial heart valve.
