Hawthorn trees bloom during the spring and summer months, May to June, and produce white flowers that are used as an herbal supplement to prevent and treat certain heart and lung conditions, according to Drugs.com. A hawthorn allergy, whether airborne or ingested, is considered very uncommon. If you develop adverse reactions during the springtime you should see an allergist to determine which pollen is causing your allergic reaction. If you develop reactions after taking a hawthorn supplement, discontinue use and talk with your doctor.

Pollen Allergy

If you're allergic to the pollen of the hawthorn tree, you will develop allergy symptoms during the spring and summer months. According to National Jewish Health, pollen allergies are triggered when you inhale pollen from the air. After exposure to the hawthorn pollen, you will develop cold-like symptoms within minutes. Symptoms may include itchy eyes, watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, itchy throat, eye swelling and sinus congestion. Once the pollen is removed from the environment, your symptoms will subside. The most effective way to prevent and treat the condition is to receive a medial diagnosis and stay indoors during high pollen season.

Supplement Allergic Reaction

An allergic reaction after taking a hawthorn supplement is more serious than a pollen allergy. Drugs.com warns that an allergic reaction to a hawthorn supplement can cause a serious allergic reaction, anaphylactic shock. You may develop shortness of breath, hives, facial, lip or tongue swelling and the sensation of a lump in your throat. These symptoms need to be reported to your doctor as soon as possible to avoid further compilations. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology states that the introduction of any new substance, such as herbal supplements or medications can cause an allergic reaction.

Diagnosis

In order to diagnose your condition, your doctor may advise allergy tests to determine the exact cause of your allergic reaction. A sample of your blood will be used to identify if allergy antibodies, immunoglobulin E, are created when hawthorn is introduced. Skin tests are commonly used by injecting a small amount of the allergen under the skin to determine if your skin becomes inflamed or swollen.

Side Effect Consideration

Not all side effects from taking a hawthorn supplement are related to an allergic reaction. The most common side effects after taking hawthorn are fatigue, nausea and sweating, according to Drugs.com. All adverse reactions need to be discussed with your doctor. You may be advised to discontinue the use of the supplement.
