Obesity and excessive weight have become an increasing concern for Americans. In addition to social implications, obesity can have a significant effect on physical and mental health. To combat excessive weight, many have turned to weight loss medications.
Each type of medication differs in the mechanism by which the drug helps weight loss. Alli is an over-the-counter medication that blocks fat absorption instead of suppressing your appetite.
Please check with a healthcare professional before taking any weight loss medications.
Obesity
The incidence of obesity in the U.S. in 2009 was 26.9 percent according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. People with a body mass index of 25 or more are considered overweight, while those with a body mass index of 30 or more are termed obese. Obesity is a major risk factor for the development of heart, vascular, and metabolic diseases. Unfortunately, poor dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles have contributed to the growing prevalence of obesity in America.
Alli
Originally available by prescription only, orlistat, the active ingredient in Alii, induces weight loss by blocking inhibiting lipase enzymes and the absorption of dietary fat in the digestive tract. Since these enzymes cannot break dietary fat into absorbable smaller compounds, fat stays within the intestine and is excreted during defecation. Weight loss may occur as a result of lower caloric intake since fat is not absorbed.
Approved in 2007 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, orlistat was formulated into a lower dosage form and marketed under the brand name Alli for purchase over-the-counter. Orlistat has not been found to have a significant impact on appetite suppression.
Significance
Alli is not considered an appetite suppressant and does not contain side effects related to excessive sympathomimetic stimulation. However, Alli can cause side effects that include diarrhea, abdominal pain and fecal leakage.
Considerations
Use over-the-counter and prescription medications for weight loss in conjunction with good dietary habits and exercise.
Patients should speak with a physician before using any weight loss medications.
