Air walkers provide a low impact option for general or cardiopulmonary exercise. Air walkers can also combine the exercise of walking with an upper body workout. A bar having one end as a platform for the foot and the other end forming a handle for the hand pivots about the upright machine supports of the air walker. In the cheaper machines, the resistance is provided by a knob on the pivots. On more expensive machines, the bar connects to an air piston, like an air shock absorber on automobile. The resistance of the piston can be adjusted typically by screwing a handle--like adjusting the air closer on a screen door. When the user steps up on the platform, he is walking in air and the lack of impact is like walking on air.
Low Impact Exercise
Since the foot never leaves the platform, there is no impact of pounding on a surface like an open road or treadmill. This reduces stress on leg and foot joints and ligaments. Joint stress increases with body weight, so air walkers may be a good option for the overweight. However, be sure to check the maximum weight limit on each model before selecting an air walker.
The user determines the pace, unlike a treadmill where a pace is preset and the user adjusts his stride to the machine. The user can set the air walker resistance very low for a gentle stroll, run at a fast pace for a cardiovascular workout or increase the resistance for strength training.
Upper Body Exercise
The user may push the handles with a motion like a bench press when using an air walker, so the machine can also exercise the biceps, triceps, deltoids and pectorals, not just the legs.
Cost, Maintenance and Storage
The cost of air walkers ranges from $100 to $500 in 2009. Most air walkers fold for storage. They require little maintenance; just keep the shafts of the pistons free of dust and lubricate them annually, usually with white lithium grease.
Overall Advantages
The ability to work many muscle groups at a variety of speeds and options, with low impact, makes the air walker a versatile piece of exercise equipment suited for users with varied exercise goals.
