How to Lose Weight Eating Every Other Day

One type of eating plan that you can try to lose weight is eating every other day. This diet is known as the QOD Diet with the QOD standing for "every other day." The diet was developed by a retired kidney specialist, Dr. John Daugirdas, to help people lose significant weight. Due to the restrictive nature of the diet, it is not likely that your doctor will recommend it if you suffer from any type of medical condition.

Step 1

Spend the first day eating a normal diet. You'll want to include lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy foods in your diet. You can have one dessert item per day when following the QOD Diet. Women should consume between 1,200 and 1,800 calories and men should have 1,800 and 2,400.

Step 2

Include 700 mg of sodium at breakfast on the days that you are eating a normal diet. The salt helps you avoid feeling weak on the restricted calorie days.

Step 3

Eat a very low calorie diet on alternate days. You will only consume 300 non-protein calories and 200 protein calories. You are allowed an extra 100 calories if you are an active person.

Step 4

Aim for a large amount of salt and potassium in foods on the days that your calories are restricted. The QOD Diet recommends that you get 1,500 to 2,000 mg of sodium and 2000 mg of potassium. You can meet these requirements by consuming tomato juice, yogurt and orange juice.

Step 5

Take a calcium and magnesium supplement on your low calorie eating days. You should have 600 mg of calcium and 200 mg of magnesium.
