How to Make Shakes for Liquid Diets

Liquid diets are used for detoxification or weight loss. Sometimes, they are used after a medical procedure while the patient is still healing and unable to consume solid food. Shakes are a common way to prepare food in a liquid diet. There are countless ways to make shakes. However, following these general guidelines can help you plan and prepare better shakes for your liquid diet.

Step 1

Fruits and vegetables are the foods of choice when it comes to liquid diets. They provide essential vitamins and minerals that can help detoxify, are full of fiber to promote weight loss and are rich in cancer-fighting antioxidants. Select a combination of fruits and/or vegetables that will complement each other (bananas and strawberries, carrots and tomatoes). Clean and cut the fruit into small pieces and place them in a blender. Use about a cup of fruits or vegetables.

Step 2

Add something cold. Milk shakes contain ice cream to make them cold and creamy. If you don't want to use ice cream, you can substitute with frozen yogurt or ice. Try 12 ice cubes or 1 cup of ice cream or frozen yogurt.

Step 3

Add liquid. Liquid can be water, milk or fruit juice. This will help blend the shake and give it a drinkable consistency. Begin with a small amount of liquid and add more until the shake has the desired texture.

Step 4

Consider adding a protein powder. Protein helps promote weight loss by repairing muscles (muscle mass raises metabolism), can satisfy your appetite and gives you energy. Add a scoop of whey or soy protein powder to your shakes.

Step 5

Add a healthy sweetener if desired. Honey is a good choice because it has many health benefits (anti-bacterial, anti-fungal) and can help make the shake more palatable. Certain fruits, such as bananas, can double as a fruit and a sweetener because of their high natural sugar content.

Step 6

Turn on the blender and liquefy for several minutes, or until all ingredients are smooth and consistent.
