While the overall effectiveness of the Wii Fit game has been hotly debated, it can still help get you moving when you've led a sedentary lifestyle. The motivation of unlocking games and seeing your progress can also help you make fitness a daily part of your life. The Wii Fit exercises are sorted into four categories: strength training, aerobics, yoga and balance. Each offers different games to help you burn calories while becoming stronger and more flexible overall.
Strength Training
The exercises in the strength training category are performed in conjunction with the Wii Fit balance board. You'll practice exercises that you would find in an exercise class or DVD. From leg extensions to squats, lunges, push-ups and crunches, the balance board and Wii remote work together to record your number of repetitions along with your form so that your virtual trainer can correct your posture and offer encouraging remarks.
Aerobics
The aerobics section of the game is designed to elevate your heart rate while playing games that engage you. Especially appropriate for children, the aerobics games are usually competitive, which can help motivate you to work harder. You'll experience games like Hula Hooping, running, step aerobics and boxing. Each has several levels, including basic, advanced and freestyle so you can choose the level that suits your fitness ability the best, with room for improvement.
Balance
The balance games with the Wii Fit are those designed to help improve your balance and coordination. They use the balance board to measure your center of gravity. You can choose from games that challenge you to hit a soccer ball with your head, walk a tightrope, ski on a slalom course or do ski jumps. Each will require you to move and balance your body for better direction and landing. The Wii Fit will track your progress so you know whether or not you're improving.
Yoga
The yoga portion of the Wii Fit game takes you through a variety of beginner yoga poses, including tree pose, sun salutation, breathing exercises, chair pose and downward-facing dog. While not a substitution for a qualified yoga instructor, performing the yoga poses on the balance board will help the game to measure your movements and correct your posture. The yoga section is a good introduction to furthering your technique in yoga.
