Information On the Maker's Diet

The Maker's diet is an eating plan based on the foods included in the Bible. The diet's founder, Jordan Rubin, Ph.D., is a nutritional consultant and founder of the dietary supplement company Garden of Life. He founded the Maker's diet to treat his own health disorder. He suffered from Crohn's disease as a young adult, and after trying the dietary recommendations of a variety of doctors, sent his disease into remission by eating only the foods included in the Bible. In 2005, he recorded his experiences and dietary plan in the book "The Maker's Diet," which became a New York Times bestseller.

Fish

The Maker's diet recommends eating foods from the Bible's book of Leviticus, including fish with scales, such as salmon and tuna. According to Rubin, the Bible says people should not eat fish with no fins, so the Maker's diet recommends avoiding fish such as catfish and eels. The diet also requires eliminating hard shellfish, such as lobster and crabs, from the diet. The diet also recommends eliminating pork products, which is aligned with Jewish dietary requirements.

Whole Foods

Another tenet of the Maker's diet is avoiding processed foods and consuming a wide variety of whole foods. The diet recommends eating raw milk, sprouted grains, organic eggs, organic meats and uncooked foods, such as raw vegetables and fruits. Processing foods are contrary to the intended diet prescribed by the Bible, according to Rubin. The raw foods included in the dietary plan provide enzymes and beneficial bacteria that support the body's natural defense systems.

The Diet's Phases

The Maker's diet is divided into three phases. The first phase is a detoxifying period. All processed and starchy foods are eliminated from the diet during this phase that lasts two weeks. Sugars are dramatically reduced to rebalance the insulin response, and the initial weight loss begins. Phase two lasts for the subsequent two weeks. Some eliminated starchy foods are reintroduced as the dieter begins to more efficiently process sugars. Lean meats, such as beef, lamb, bison, chicken and duck, and fruits, vegetables and grains are allowed during this period. The diet's final stage, phase three, lasts for 10 days. During this phase, more eliminated foods are reintroduced, such as desserts made with natural sugars. In addition to the approved foods in this phase, nutritional supplements that support the body's natural processes may be added.

Exercise and Lifestyle Changes

The Maker's diet recommends exercising outside in the sun. The plan also emphasizes the biblical recommendation of not working for at least one day during the week.
