The fitness industry is one of the fastest growing industries in which to start a career. With a projected 29 percent growth over just a 10-year period -- according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics -- the need for personal trainers is in demand. If you have a passion for fitness and an interest in helping others achieve their goals, becoming a personal trainer may be the ideal career choice for you. With appropriate steps and dedication, you can become a certified personal trainer in a matter of months.
Step 1
Choose an accredited certified personal trainer program. Choose from the American Council on Exercise, the International Sports Science Association, National Academy of Sports Medicine or the American College of Sports Medicine.
Step 2
Sign up for the personal trainer certification. The personal trainer certification process costs between $400 and $600 as of 2011. This fee includes study materials, access to a help desk and the fee for taking your certified personal trainer examination.
Step 3
Study. You will receive a textbook, study guide, DVDs and access to online quizzes and slide shows. Study this material carefully. You will be learning anatomy, exercise science, exercise programing, fitness assessments, nutrition, lifestyle modification, working with special populations and how to propel your career as a personal trainer.
Step 4
Sign-up for a CPR course. Most organizations require that you be certified in CPR and first aid prior to sitting for the exam. You will need to present proof of certification at the time of your exam.
Step 5
Take the practice tests. Position yourself in a quiet room without any distractions -- to simulate a testing facility. This test will give you a good idea of how you might do on the actual certified personal trainer exam.
Step 6
Schedule your exam. Allot a 2-hour window for the exam.
Step 7
Take your exam. Arrive at the testing facility early. Make sure to bring your identification and proof that you are current with CPR and first aid certification.
Step 8
Receive your certification. Upon receiving your certification, you are eligible to apply for personal trainer jobs or start your own personal training business.
Tips and Warnings
- For an added edge in a competitive job market, consider pursuing a college degree in exercise science, kinesiology or a related field.
- Once signing up, you only have a certain amount of time to complete the certification. You may be given between six and eight months to complete the certification. With the exception of the International Sports Science Association, all accredited certification institutes will charge you an extension fee.
