Winsor Pilates is a fitness company that specializes in Pilates education, instruction and equipment. Pilates programs feature low-impact routines to strengthen the core muscles and burn calories. Although some of the Winsor Pilates programs feature newer equipment or ideas, they largely stay true to originator Joseph Pilates' original routines.
History
Winsor Pilates was founded by Mari Winsor, who opened her first Pilates studio in 1990 in Los Angeles. At the time, Pilates was not widely known outside the dance community. This seemingly new exercise method caught on with celebrity clientele in L.A. Winsor took her workouts to a national audience in 2003 with a DVD series which had sold more than 50 million units as of 2011.
Seamless Transitioning
The Winsor Pilates programs are distinguished by quick transition between traditional Pilates exercises, which adds a cardiovascular element to the core strengthening benefits of Pilates. According to the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, cardiovascular exercise is an essential component to a healthy lifestyle and is the most efficient way to burn calories.
Products
Mari Winsor has co-authored three books on Pilates and released a series of DVDs. The books and the DVDs are geared toward people just beginning their Pilates practices. Fitness website That's Fit has reviewed many of the Winsor Pilates DVDs and cites her ability to thoroughly explain all of the exercises to beginners. The site notes that the instruction may seem excessive to practitioners already familiar with Pilates. Winsor Pilates also offers sets of equipment such as stability balls and resistance bands with select DVDs.
Studio
The focus of the Winsor Pilates brand is still on the studio. As of 2011, Winsor Pilates operated two studios in the Los Angeles area. Both offered group classes, private instruction and semi-private instruction. Winsor herself and more than 30 instructors teach and see clients. The cost for a mat class was $15 per person per class, semi-private sessions were $45 per person and private sessions were $90.
