Nutrisystem is a diet food delivery service that ships low-calorie portion-controlled food directly to your door. There are several types of plans available -- plans specifically for men, women, seniors, vegetarians and those with Type 2 diabetes. There is also a "flex" option which offers you the opportunity to eat the pre-packaged meals five days a week and cook your own meals, or eat out, on the weekends. The Nutrisystem program encourages you to exercise and includes a work-out DVD.
Step 1
Log-on to the Nutrisystem website and chose which plan works best for you. Women and men each have the choice of basic, silver -- for those older than 65, diabetic and vegetarian. There is also a family option, if more than one person in your household is on the Nutrisystem program. Each day includes three meals and two snacks, which you will need to supplement with fresh vegetables, fruits and low-fat dairy products.
Step 2
Talk to your weight-loss counselor. Once you've signed-up for the Nutrisystem program, a weight loss counselor will contact you to discuss your personal health situation and weight loss goals. There is also an online support forum and access to Nutrisystem's team of weight-loss professionals via email or telephone.
Step 3
Follow the Nutrisystem eating plan, including using the provided grocery list to purchase supplemental items. The Nutrisystem plan is based on the glycemic index and includes 1,200 to 1,500 calories daily, broken down so that 55 percent of your calories come from complex carbohydrates, 25 percent of your calories come from protein and only 20 percent of your calories come from fat.
Step 4
Use the included work-out DVD or design your own exercise program. Any healthy weight-loss program includes some form of physical activity and the Nutrisystem program encourages you to exercise daily. The website features an online progress tracking tool that you may use to record your food intake, exercise and weight lost.
Tips and Warnings
- A 28-day program typically costs between $300 and $350 as of February 2011. You may receive a discount if you sign-up for Nutrisystem's automatic redelivery option.
- Because the food on the Nutrisystem program is pre-packaged and pre-portioned, you may not learn how to make healthy choices for yourself after you've finished with Nutrisystem. Always consult your doctor before beginning any weight loss program.
