Viruses and viral infections can affect people of all ages. Some common viral infections include the common cold, warts and influenza. More severe viral infections can include HIV infection and AIDS. According to MedlinePlus, viral infections are difficult to treat as the viruses live inside the cells of your body. Though few anti-viral medications are available to treat these types of infections, some vaccines are available to help prevent them from developing. In addition, herbs that carry anti-viral properties may also help protect against viral infections. Always consult your doctor before using herbs to treat any type of health condition.

Echinacea

Immune-boosting echincacea has been used traditionally for over 400 years for treating syphilis, scarlet fever, blood poisoning and other ailments. In addition, echinacea is used as an alternative remedy to reduce symptoms associated with the common cold and influenza. For general immune stimulation, an herbal tea can be made by adding 1 to 2g of dried herb to hot water. Echinacea tea may be consumed three times per day for up to 10 days.

Astragalus

Astragalus contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that make it helpful for wound healing. In addition, astragalus has antiviral properties that help boost the immune system making it effective for preventing the common cold. This herb has been used as an alternative treatment for people who have compromised immune systems and may help speed recovery time. To stimulate the immune system, astragalus standardized extract may be taken in doses of 250 to 500mg up to four times per day.

Elderberry

Elderberry has been used for many years to treat the common cold and flu. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, elderberry may have anti-viral, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. However, this herb should be used with caution as it contains substances that are similar to cyanide, thus making it toxic. Elderberry is available in the form of liquid extract, capsules and syrup. Three to 5g of dried elderberry can be added to 1 cup of boiling water and drunk up to three times per day.

Warnings

Some herbs may have adverse reactions if you use them in combination with prescription or over-the-counter medications. Women who may be pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid using herbs unless otherwise directed by a physician. Additionally, you should speak with your child's pediatrician before administering herbal remedies to treat any type of health condition.
