Disc surgery can range from a total disc replacement to removal of one disc portion. Back exercises serve as a recuperation tool to help you regain your strength and agility while preparing you for a functioning lifestyle. Many back exercises after disc surgery start within three weeks after surgery, but this varies according to your individual level of injury. Full recovery from back disc surgery can take up to four months. Check with your doctor before you start any exercise regimen after surgery.

Walking

Walking after disc surgery improves your overall cardiovascular functioning level. Walking usually starts within 48 hours after disc surgery, according to the physical therapy firm known as The Physiotherapy Site. Start out walking on a flat surface at a comfortable pace for five minutes. As strength increases, walk further and faster. Walk either indoors or outdoors, but remember to wear well-fitted shoes and comfortable clothing. Stay aware of your surroundings including weather, low-hanging branches, dogs, uneven pavement and people.

Back Strengthener

Back exercises after disc surgery need to include strengthening maneuvers that stabilize, tone and control your back muscles. Doing a hand and leg stretch will help. Get down onto your hands and knees onto an exercise mat. Straighten your back while looking down at the mat. Tighten your abdominal muscles. Slowly and gently lift your right arm and left leg while straightening both. Do not move your hips or back. Your body weight will be on your left hand and right knee. Hold this stretch for five seconds. Slowly return to your original position. Relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this exercise five times.

Swimming

Water based exercises can be used as back exercises after disc surgery. Exercises such as swimming help increase heart and lung capacity while strengthening the cardiovascular system. For these reasons, swimming can be an effective exercise while you recuperate from disc surgery. Swimming can start as early as eight weeks after a disc surgery. Get into chest deep water and swim across the pool's width or one length, depending upon your strength level. Rest for 30 seconds. If you are strong enough, swim back to your starting point. Gradually increase your time and speed as you become stronger.

Considerations

Take into consideration a number of factors while you recuperate from disc surgery. Consider massage, applying ice and taking anti-inflammatory medications to control muscle spasms, inflammation and pain. Consider performing everyday tasks such as dressing, getting in and out of bed and/or shower, reaching for items plus moving your back in more back-friendly ways to protect your back form undue stress and prepare yourself for more strenuous-level activities. Remember to drink plenty of liquids while exercising to replace lost fluids, even if you are not thirsty. Consider consulting with your medical care provider, whether physical therapist or physician, to develop a personalized program that suits your needs. Not all exercises may be for you.
