Football is considered an extreme contact sport and is played mostly in the United States. Players range from young, elementary school teams (referred to as "peewee football players") to post-college professionals. While football is often played as a contact sport, it can also be played in the form of tag football. Tag football requires players to pull a tag attached to the waist instead of tackling, and doesn't require as much protective gear.
Tights
Football tights are sometimes referred to as leggings and serve multiple purposes. They provide an additional layer of protection for players; also, because tights are made from Spandex or Lycra, they allow for extra agility and flexibility. Tights help keep players warm, especially during the chilly fall and winter season.
Jersey
During a game, football players typically wear jerseys so the athletes can identify who's on their team. Jerseys typically have a number and name on the back, which helps players and sportscasters know who is underneath the layers of padding and helmet.
Gloves
Two types of gloves exist in football. They include receiver gloves and linemen gloves, and each type serves its own purpose. Receiver gloves are worn by players in most specialty positions, including receivers and running and defensive backs; the gloves make catching the ball easier. Linemen gloves have more padding than receiver gloves and are used by offensive and defensive linemen to protect hands, fingers and knuckles.
Socks
Most football socks are constructed out of a combination of acrylic, nylon and elastic. This allows the socks to stretch over layers of padding and prevents them from slipping while the players are in action. Football socks are longer than everyday socks; most come with a fully cushioned bottom for extra comfort.
Padding
To protect themselves from injury, football players must protective gear, including helmets, jock straps and many layers of padding. Padding includes shoulder pads, a large piece made of foam, plastic, metal and textiles, and hip, tail, thigh and knee pads. Other protective gear includes mouth guards, neck rolls and rib protection.
