How Can You Lose Weight in a Healthy Way?

Diets are the most popular way to lose weight. Numerous diets claim that you will be able to "shed" the pounds with their meal plans or weight loss program. However, many of these diets are not realistic and do not offer any real health benefits, other than very quick weight loss, which is considered unhealthy and unsustainable. The Mayo Clinic notes that the most successful way to lose weight is to make a permanent and healthy change to your diet, along with participating in daily exercise.

Step 1

Avoid fad diets as they make unrealistic promises of weight loss. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, fad diets are low in carbohydrates and calories, causing fluid loss in the body and resulting in excessive weight loss. However, once you replenish your body's water, you will regain all the weight. To distinguish fad diets from regular diets, look for the elimination of a specific food group. Additionally, if there is no nutrition or medical information available about the diet, then it is most likely a fad diet.

Step 2

Count your calories. The more calories you remove from your daily food intake, the more fat you will burn. The U.S. National Library of Medicine says that one pound of fat contains around 3,500 calories. Attempt to reduce your calorie intake by 500 calories a day, as this will help you to lose one pound a week, given that 500 calories by 7 days is equal to 3,500 calories per week. To lose two pounds a week, you would have to reduce your calorie intake by 1,000 calories a day. Losing one to two pounds a week is the best approach, as losing too much weight at once is not healthy.

Step 3

Ensure you exercise daily, as exercise is an essential component of dieting and weight loss, as you need to burn off calories. When you are active, your body burns more calories. This helps to quickly burn off the food you consume, while at the same time helps boost your metabolism. The Mayo Clinic says that small things such as cleaning the house, mowing the lawn and walking the dog are all good forms of physical activity that can help you burn calories. Try to exercise daily, aiming for about 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity.

Step 4

Consume vegetables and fruits everyday, as they are rich in various vitamins and minerals that can help you burn calories fast by helping to enhance the speed of your metabolism.

Step 5

Drink plenty of water. Water helps you feel full, so you do not overeat or get the munchies outside of mealtimes. Try to stay away from sweet beverages, as they contain high amounts of sugar.
