If your wife has expressed a desire to lose weight but says she needs your help to get started, you may feel at a loss as to how you can possibly make a difference. The marriage relationship is incredibly complex, but one of the benefits is the ability to be a support and a comfort to one another in times of difficulty. You can take several steps to help your wife achieve her weight loss goals, but some may require sacrifice on your part.

Step 1

Get rid of any tempting food in the house that could derail your wife's weight loss goals, even if it means losing out on some of your favorite snacks. Find healthy foods you and your wife love together, such as fresh fruit, and stock up on them on a regular basis.

Step 2

Find physical activities and types of exercise you can do with your wife. You don't necessarily have to go to the gym together, but finding something you enjoy doing together that gets your heart rate up can help her burn calories. Take walks together in the evenings rather than sitting in front of the TV, for example.

Step 3

Offer encouragement and excitement when your wife reaches a goal or milestone, such as a weekly weight goal. Reward her with a small gesture -- not food -- when she reaches significant milestones, like a monthly goal or a large number of pounds lost, such as 10 or 25.

Step 4

Set a weight loss goal yourself. When your wife feels like you're in on it with her, she will likely be more motivated and feel like she has a teammate rather than a cheerleader. Set a realistic goal you can achieve and stick with it. Don't turn it into a competition, though.

Step 5

Go shopping with your spouse and pick out healthier foods together. Plan out the meals you eat together to ensure you're getting the right balance of food groups and nutrients. Cook your meals together to make sure you're using healthy food preparation habits, such as grilling or broiling rather than frying foods.
