Diabetes is a chronic metabolic condition that is characterized by high blood sugar levels. It occurs because the body either does not produce enough insulin, which is a hormone that converts sugar into energy, or the body produces enough insulin but cannot use it properly. Treatment, which prevents the development of potentially life-threatening complications such as heart disease, often comprises drug therapy and dietary measures. Herbs and other types of alternative medicine may also help regulate blood glucose levels, although they should not be used in place of conventional treatments.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon may help regulate blood sugar levels. Evidence that cinnamon is an effective diabetes treatment is mixed. Consuming medicinal quantities of cinnamon is likely safe, but MedlinePlus cautions that taking large amounts or using it for long periods may not be safe as it contains a chemical called coumarin, which may cause liver disease. Get your blood sugar levels checked regularly while taking cinnamon as there is a possibility that it may lower your blood glucose levels too much.
American Ginseng
American ginseng may help lower fasting blood glucose levels, according to research by J.T. Xie et al published in the October 2007 issue of the "Journal of Food Science." As such, the authors conclude that it may be an efficacious diabetes treatment. However, the study was carried out in mice, not in humans with diabetes. RxList notes that short-term American ginseng is likely safe, but it may cause side effects including diarrhea, insomnia and headache. It may also cause a rapid heartbeat and increase blood pressure. Since American ginseng may alter your blood sugar levels, it is important that you monitor your blood sugar levels regularly.
Acupuncture
The results of a clinical study published in the October 2007 issue of "Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion," show that acupuncture may improve glucose metabolism and blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine that involves inserting fine needles into the skin at different locations on the body. According to practitioners of this form of alternative medicine, this unblocks the flow of energy, or "qi," thus restoring health. Consult a fully qualified acupuncturist.
Considerations
Diabetes can lead to serious complications, such as vision loss, stroke, kidney disease and nerve damage if left untreated. Always follow your doctor's advice and do not use alternative medicine in place of treatments your doctor prescribes. However, relying on prescription medicines alone is also not appropriate. Their use must be combined with lifestyle changes such as taking more exercise and eating non-starchy, low-fat foods.
