Exercise balls aren't just for the gym anymore. Large, inflatable exercise balls are an alternative to the traditional office chair. A comfortable seat provides a sturdy base and reduces strain while sitting at a desk all day. The exercise ball option offers benefits over a traditional chair, but it requires some considerations to avoid injury or discomfort.

Benefits

A steady and upright position on the exercise ball keeps you stable and prevents unwanted rolling or tipping. Without the arms or back like a regular chair, you must rely on your core muscles to provide the stability, which helps strengthen those muscles. Regular use of the ball as a chair can help improve your overall balance and posture. The ball chair allows you to do stretches and other exercises while seated. Rolling from side to side helps relieve tension while sitting at your desk.

Disadvantages

The constant muscle engagement to maintain the proper posture causes some people to become tired. Without the support of a traditional chair, discomfort is a possibility. While an exercise ball encourages proper posture, it is possible to slouch on the ball. Poor posture causes strain on the muscles just as it would in a regular office chair. If you lose your balance, a fall from the ball is a possibility. Some people discover that the ball is actually more distracting than beneficial.

Logistics Considerations

You need a ball that fits you well so that you can sit comfortably, but it also needs to allow you to sit with your legs under the desk to be productive. If you share office space, the exercise ball chair becomes a problem if space is limited. Depending on the size of the ball and the space under your desk, you may have difficulty storing it out of the way when not in use.

Safety Considerations

Inflate the exercise ball so it is sturdy but has some give. This provides support without being overinflated, which increases the chances of you bouncing or rolling of your seat. Add more air to the ball as needed to maintain the proper inflation level. Inspect the ball occasionally to look for wear and damage. A wide stance with your feet adds to the stability to reduce your chances or falling. Keep a regular office chair on hand if possible as a backup in case the exercise ball becomes uncomfortable or causes strain.
