Pancreatitis is characterized by inflammation of the pancreas, the organ that produces the hormone insulin. Pancreatitis may be acute or chronic in nature and hinders the ability of the body to absorb nutrients. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that it is essential to get medical treatment as soon as possible, particularly if you have acute pancreatitis, as it may cause life-threatening complications. Some herbs may help to reduce inflammation and aid recovery, but they must not be used in place of conventional medical treatments.
Causes
UMMC notes that there are several causes of pancreatitis, but adds that gallstones are the main culprit behind acute pancreatitis, while consuming too much alcohol may cause chronic pancreatitis. Other factors that may contribute to the development of pancreatitis include certain medications, high blood triglyceride levels and injury to the abdomen. UMMC adds that some forms of surgery may temporarily cut off blood supply to the pancreas, leading to pancreatic tissue damage.
Potentially Helpful Herbs
Several herbs may help to reduce inflammation and aid healing, including reishi mushroom and cat's claw. Reishi mushroom contains a host of biologically active compounds and is used to treat a variety of conditions, including hypertension and viral infections, and to reduce inflammation. Cat's claw is a woody vine that grows in Central and Southern America. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, it has been used as a medicinal treatment for centuries. UMMC suggest taking 150 mg to 300 mg of reishi mushroom two or three times daily to reduce inflammation; or, you may prefer to take 20 mg of a standardized extract of cat's claw three times daily. Ask a medical practitioner whether these dosages are appropriate for you.
Efficacy
Studies examining the role of cat's claw in the treatment of pancreatitis are lacking, while NCCAM notes that there is not enough evidence to determine whether cat's claw is an effective treatment for any condition. Research into the efficacy of reishi mushroom also is lacking. RxList states that while reishi mushroom contains chemicals that may potentially have beneficial effects, there is insufficient evidence to rate this herb as an effective treatment for any medical condition.
Considerations
Although reishi mushroom and cat's claw are natural products, it does mean that they are free of side effects or suitable for everyone. Reishi mushroom may be safe for most people, according to RxList, but it may cause side effects, including a dry throat, stomach upset and bloody stools. Avoid this herb if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have low pressure or a bleeding disorder. NCCAM notes that cat's claw is unlikely to cause any major side effects, but cautions that pregnant women should avoid it, as it may have abortive properties. Also avoid cat's claw if you have an immune system disorder.
