Yoga videos are a convenient means of doing a high quality workout and practice in the privacy of your home. They allow you to work out when it is convenient, and they do away with travel time to and from a yoga studio or gym. The wide variety of videos on the market today allows you the ability to pick and choose exactly the style, level and length of your workout.

Step 1

Decide on the specific goals that you would like to attain by using the yoga video before you buy it. For example, think about whether you are looking to relax, build muscle, increase your flexibility or master certain specific poses.

Step 2

Choose your discipline; determine whether you are looking for a vigorous practice, such as vinyasa flow or ashtanga, or prefer to focus on alignment as anusara and Iyengar do. Or, perhaps you want to relax with gentle or restorative yoga.

Step 3

Determine your fitness level and choose a yoga video that corresponds and will keep you challenged so that you'll be able to use it for a lengthy amount of time. Do not choose a video that is too easy or you are likely to become bored; in the same way, one that is several levels above your ability may leave you frustrated and may increase the risk of injury. The video should also include proper instructions.

Step 4

Focus on your knowledge level when evaluating videos. Think about whether you want the video to teach you more about yoga methods along with the asanas, such as breathing exercises and meditation. Or, you may want a video that includes lessons on traditional yoga texts, such as the Vedas.

Step 5

Choose a video that features one of your favorite teachers or gurus. Most top teachers release yoga videos, so you are able to practice with them whenever you like.

Step 6

Look for variety in a yoga video. Different sequences, routines and options will allow you to get more out of the video by mixing it up each time that you practice. Most likely, you will become bored or unchallenged by a video that has limited offerings.

Step 7

Look at the length of the video as well as the duration of the different sequences and routines. Choose a video that offers variety and will allow you to practice according to your schedule; options should include shorter compact segments of about 20 minutes as well a longer options, such as 60 or 90 minutes.
