5 Things You Need to Know About the Shoulders

1. Carry the Weight of the World

The deltoid and rotator cuff muscles are the main muscle groups in the shoulders. You can build them up to give the rest of the body a leaner and more fit look. They are the main attendees for much of the activity of the body. Lifting, carrying and anything we do with our arms is tied to those main muscle groups, so we need to keep them in shape. The shoulders are vital to our appearance and our ability to move and participate in most sports and other mundane activities.

2. Lighten the Load

Gradually build up the weight when lifting to increase shoulder mass. Extreme strain on the shoulders from lifting too heavy weights too quickly is a major source of shoulder injury. Athletes who throw a ball or discus also are prime candidates for shoulder pain. Make sure arm movements are fluid. Follow through will get your ball farther than any jerky movements that could throw out the shoulder.

3. Stand Up to the World

Good, straight, relaxed posture is not only great for your overall appearance, but one of the best ways to protect the shoulders and ensure they will serve you for a lifetime. When standing, you can best judge if your shoulders are in the right position if your earlobes are just above the center of your shoulders. Sit with your back straight and your shoulders straight. Slumping will not only affect the shape of your shoulders, but can affect the entire inner workings of your body if you are not in alignment. Move around regularly if you sit for long periods of time and rotate your shoulders to keep them flexible.

4. Magic Fingers

In addition to the strenuous workout the shoulders receive during most exercise routines and sports activities, other stress shows up first in the shoulders. Shoulder pain can really cramp your style and keep you from enjoying life and a good workout. During warm ups and relaxation time, focus on the shoulders. Make sure to stretch them before and after exercise. When resting, give them proper support. Get a massage whenever you feel tension building in the shoulders. Those muscles often need a little outside help to maintain their flexibility.

5. Pay the Piper

Prolonged strain on the shoulders can cause permanent damage. Aging also will show up as the muscles become more lax and begin to degenerate. And some are more prone to shoulder injuries than others. Unlucky genes will rear their ugly head in these complicated muscles. Surgery is available to repair rotator cuff injuries, but the shoulder will never be the same. After the surgeon is finished cutting the muscles and putting them back together, they will always be weaker and tender to the touch. Prevention is the best approach to shoulder injuries.
