5 Things You Need to Know About Training for a Triathlon

1. Challenge Up

Training to become a triathlete is a challenging endeavor. Even if you're used to playing sports, triathlon training will require you to push yourself beyond what you're used to. It requires real staying power, and if you begin regular training, you'll be in the best shape ever. You consistently get a total body workout since triathlon events typically include running, cycling and swimming. Some events, such as aquathlon, duathlon, involve slightly different activities. Winter triathlon usually includes running, cycling and skiing.

2. Crawl or Breaststroke Toward the Finish Line

Unless you've been on a swim team, often the swimming part of a triathlon proves to be the most challenging for new triathletes. Not only are you out of breath usually anyway when participating in a triathlon, but also water can be choppy, or waves can be big. Some triathletes opt for breaststroke rather than front crawl swimming, so they can better see where they're going and avoid running into other triathletes. Train with a swim coach to get new skills down and fine-tune ones known.

3. Land Racing

Cycling and running call upon different muscles in the body. Leg movement is unique for each activity. It's important to practice both activities consistently, so you'll be physically prepared for a triathlon. Learn and practice cycling techniques for speed and maneuverability. It never hurts to research running skills either. You may be used to jogging or running, but professional runners develop and maintain different skills to help them also with speed and movement.

4. Appointment With Yourself

Training for triathlon requires a solid and steady workout schedule. Develop a personal schedule with a trainer/coach or read about others' triathlon training schedules and come up with your own. Be prepared for changes besides those happening to your muscles and form. Some people experience inward change or spirituality during intense training. Begin to transform yourself as you prepare for triathlons. Take at least one day during your triathlon training to take it easy. Easy days are included in training schedules, which means very light exercise is scheduled for at least one day a week.

5. Fuel the Inferno

Eating right is important for anyone. When you're training for triathlon, however, it's crucial. Basically, you can't train without fuel for your body. A triathlete needs tons of fruits and vegetables as well as plenty of proteins and whole grains. Load up on complex carbohydrates of all kinds because your body will quickly burn them. You'll know it if you haven't eaten enough carbs--your body just won't go anymore. It requires lots of energy from carbohydrates during training. When a body depletes its energy, and it can't rely on complex carbs to keep it going, it naturally starts to use muscle instead. Preserve your muscle and eat right for triathlon training.
