Orange oil is used in many cleaning products for its scent and ability to cut through grease. It is also used in air fresheners and cooking. If you've been diagnosed with an allergy to citrus, you should avoid the use of this product. Allergic reactions to orange oil can occur when the substance comes into direct contact with the skin or when you ingest it. If you develop any adverse reactions after toughing or consuming orange oil, see your doctor for further evaluation.
Background
All allergic reactions are caused by a malfunction of your immune system. When you eat, touch or breathe a substance that your body identifies as a potentially harmful substance, your immune system overreacts and begins to fight the allergen. During this reaction, immunoglobulin E, or IgE, antibodies are created to protect the body. When your immune system creates these antibodies, mast cells respond by creating histamine. Histamine produced in soft tissue causes inflammation and irritation. The presence of histamine is what is responsible for most allergy symptoms.
Allergic Contact Dermatitis
Orange oil can cause an allergic reaction simply by touching it. Allergic contact dermatitis is a skin rash that forms within minutes of touching the oil. The American Academy of Dermatology states that after coming into direct contact with the substance, your skin will become red, itchy and form blisters. Treat the affected area by washing it with soap and water and applying hydrocortisone to reduce the inflammation and swelling.
Common Reactions
If you develop an allergic reaction after consuming orange oil, you may develop various symptoms involving your digestive system, respiratory system and skin. Common allergic reaction symptoms from a food allergy include nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramping, abdominal pain, vomiting, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, sinus congestion, runny nose, sinus headaches and postnasal drip. Your skin may develop hives or eczema or you may experience a general tingling or itching sensation after you eat a food containing orange oil.
Severe Reactions
Severe allergic reactions are rare but possible. If you're diagnosed with an allergy to citrus or oranges, do not consume orange oil. A severe allergic reaction can be life-threatening and needs to be treated immediately. If you become lightheaded, your face swells, you develop hives and you cannot breathe, call 911 immediately.
