Soccer is much more than just a bunch of players running around and kicking a ball up and down a field. Many other elements are at play during the course of a game. Players must be skilled at controlling the ball with their feet because hand use is not allowed. Learning how to trap the ball is an important skill for youth players to learn to continue to progress.
Definition
Trapping the soccer ball refers to a method of controlling a pass or kick so it falls gently at your feet. The trap is used when the soccer ball reaches you when it is still airborne, and is designed for you to be able to send out a quick pass or start up the field yourself with the ball. Simulating different real-game scenarios such as high passes, goal kicks and throw ins with kids in practice helps to sharpen their trapping skills.
Chest Trapping
One method of trapping is to "catch" the ball with your chest so it drops to the ground, gently at your feet. Have a partner throw or kick balls at chest level to get the feel. Square yourself to the ball, with your hands out to the sides a little to avoid contact. Lean back slightly as the ball makes contact to cushion the impact.
Foot Trapping
Using your feet is likely the most common form of trapping a soccer ball. Any shots or passes from a few inches off the ground to waist level are handled with your feet. For balls straight at the front of your body, square yourself and turn your foot sideways so it hits the inside. Pull the foot back slightly when the ball arrives so the ball falls directly downward. For balls delivered to the outside of your body, use the outside of your foot to accomplish the same goal.
Thigh Trapping
For shots or passes that aren't high enough for the chest, but are a little too close to get a foot on it, use your thighs. A hard shot will definitely sting a young player's leg, but it won't last long. Lift your knee up and allow the ball to hit the inside or outside of your thigh, depending on which side of your body the ball is on.
