Losing weight can often be difficult regardless of your gender, age or body type. Remaining motivated to go to the gym, exercise or stick to a new dietary regimen is critical to your long-term plan for success. While fitness programs and memberships are available on the market, you can also take a few steps to motivate yourself in losing weight, sticking with an exercise program and choosing healthier meal options.

Setting Goals

According to the Fitness Magazine website, one of the biggest reasons why you will be tempted to stray from your weight loss program is the lack of realistic or achievable goals. Setting goals that you can realistically attain will provide you increased motivation while also providing a way to track your progress through your regimen. For example, Fitness Magazine suggests making goals nonnegotiable, clear and precise, governed by a deadline that is contingent upon your individual daily schedule or lifestyle.

Avoid Excuses

Finding excuses to not go to the gym or splurge on an unhealthy meal option is another common error that you may experience during your weight loss program. For example, "feeling tired" is one excuse that you may use to not exercise; however, Robert E. Thayer, Ph.D., suggests that unless you are sleep deprived or jet lagged, no valid excuse exists for not exercising when you are tired. In fact, Thayer suggests that a mere 10 minutes of brisk walking can provide you with up to two hours of additional energy to continue exercising.

Mental Preparation

Setting your mind in the proper position to remain motivated is another critical aspect of sticking to your weight loss program. As the NowLoss.com website suggests, one way to accomplish the mental aspect of exercising or eating healthy is to use the "So That" method. For example, you can repeat to yourself that you want to lose weight to look better "so that" you will be confident at the wedding reception you will be attending. Framing your mind around logical statements can be very helpful in staying motivated.

Considerations

One person's source of motivation will differ from another's, so be sure to experiment with additional forms of self-motivation when the going gets tough. Working out with a partner or friend can also be helpful in staying motivated, especially if you are a competitive person and want to lose more weight than your counterpart.
