Mononucleosis is a viral infection that causes numerous symptoms. The National Center for Biotechnology Information states that mononucleosis is usually spread through saliva and close contact with affected people. Mononucleosis, or mono, is known as the "kissing disease," and it is most common in teenagers. Herbal remedies may not cure mononucleosis, but they may help reduce symptoms or speed recovery. Consult your doctor before using herbs to treat a health condition.

Mononucleosis

If you have mono, you are contagious even before your symptoms appear, and you remain contagious for a long time afterward. Some of the most frequently experienced signs or symptoms of this illness include weakness, fatigue, enlarged lymph nodes and sore throat. In most cases, your fever resolves in about 10 days and your swollen lymph nodes heal in approximately 4 weeks. Your fatigue may last for up to several months.

Helpful Herbs

Herbal remedies are an important part of your mononucleosis treatment plan. Phyllis Balch, nutrition researcher, certified nutritional consultant and author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," states that certain herbs are helpful for treating various aspects of your mononucleosis. For instance, spirulina, echinacea and astragalus help boost your immune system, while goldenseal helps fight infection. Anti-viral herbs, such as cat's claw, may also be helpful, as are herbs that protect your liver, such as milk thistle and dandelion.

A Powerful Herb

Goldenseal is a powerful herbal remedy that helps combat mono. Goldenseal, notes Balch, cleanses your body and fights infection. Goldenseal performs many important actions, including strengthening your immune system, improving your digestive function and stimulating your central nervous system. This herb often works best when it is alternated with echinacea. Goldenseal may help treat mono, ulcers, allergies and bladder and prostate disorders. You should avoid taking goldenseal after one week of use.

Warning

Use of herbal remedies does not guarantee a cure. Mononucleosis is usually best treated using several complementary therapies, along with therapies recommended by your doctor. Herbal remedies should always be used with caution and only after you have discussed the possible side effects with your health care provider. For helpful information about herbal medicine -- and to find out which herbs may help treat your ailment -- visit an herbalist, naturopathic physician or other appropriate healthcare provider.
