1. Eat to Lose Weight
The basic concept of losing weight revolves around the fact that all food contains calories, and you must burn more calories than you consume. In theory, negative-calorie foods burn enough calories to cover their own caloric content while also burning additional calories. Doctors who agree with the theory look at enzymes produced by negative-calorie foods as part of the way the diet works. Current negative-calorie foods are said to include asparagus, papaya, grapefruit and watermelon.
2. Critics Debate the Theory
All diets have pros and cons. Some fad diets create a yo-yo effect that often causes dieters to gain more weight than they lose. Critics point to some reasons why one should not follow the diet, such as a lack of scientific proof, a lack of information and the fact that all food has calories. In addition, if a person fails to eat enough negative-calorie foods, or they eat only negative-calorie foods, the diet won't work. Advocates for the diet show proof that these foods increasing metabolism also contain minerals and vitamins.
3. Negative-Calorie Foods Fight Empty-Calorie Foods
Along with caloric content, foods contain a nutrient content like carbohydrates or proteins, and an enzyme-producing content like vitamins and minerals. While empty-calorie foods may taste wonderful, they don't benefit the body, and provide little or no nutrients. Negative-calorie foods like apples, strawberries or raspberries are high in nutrients, minerals and vitamins and low in calories. So theoretically, the extra calories a cucumber burns should offer a bit of damage control when you eat a doughnut.
4. Healthy Meals Speed Up Weight Loss
The body needs calories to perform its basic functions. Eating negative-calorie foods without any other source of calories might put the body into a deficit. The result would be reduced energy or the inability to function. The best way to benefit from a negative-calorie diet is to combine negative-calorie foods with a well-balanced diet.
5. Smart Dieting
While the concept of eating foods that will burn additional calories may be appealing, it is important to remember that the healthiest way to lose weight is a healthy combination of diet and exercise.
