The breath, or prana, is considered to be the life force or energy in yoga. Breathing exercises can help the body by increasing blood circulation and oxygen efficiency and improving alertness and concentration, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Include breathing exercises for a more complete yoga practice.

Single Nostril Breathing

Step 1

Sit in a comfortable crossed-legged position on the floor to begin single-nostril breathing or surya bhedana pranayama, with applications to relieve allergies or sinusitis, Yoga Journal notes.

Step 2

Make a fist with your hand and then release your thumb and forefinger so that they make an L shape, palm facing your face.

Step 3

Close your right nostril with your thumb and inhale deeply through your left nostril.

Step 4

Close your left nostril with your forefinger and hold the breath in for 10 to 20 seconds.

Step 5

Release the right nostril and slowly exhale the breath through it. Reverse the action, this time breathing in through the right nostril. Repeat for 10 rounds.

Conqueror Breath

Step 1

Sit on the floor in a comfortable position in to practice conqueror breath, or ujjayi pranayama, which helps channel energy during difficult postures.

Step 2

Inhale slowly through your nostrils, with your mouth closed. Exhale through your wide-open mouth, guiding the breath across the back of your throat so it makes a soft hissing sound.

Step 3

Repeat the process exhaling instead through the nose to create the same soft hissing sound. Practice for five to 10 minutes at a time.

Lion Pose

Step 1

Sit or kneel in a comfortable position on the floor to begin the lion pose or simhasana.

Step 2

Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of six to eight.

Step 3

Open your mouth wide and stick your tongue out and down while you roll your eyes toward the ceiling as you exhale through your mouth. Repeat several times.
