Cancer involves the unchecked growth of cells in various parts of your body. Malignant cells can develop in almost all of your organs or tissues. Herbal medicines are an often helpful adjunct therapy to traditional cancer treatments, although it is always wise to check with your doctor before using herbal remedies for this purpose.
About Cancer
The American Cancer Society reports that most cancers are associated with the genes you inherit from your parents. Other possible causes of cancer include exposure to various toxins and chemicals, consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, excessive sun exposure, obesity and certain viruses. One of the most common health complications associated with cancer is metastasis, or the spread of cancer cells from one part of your body to another via your bloodstream or lymphatic system.
Herbal Therapies
In her book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," nutrition expert Phyllis A. Balch states that there are many herbal remedies that have been used to treat various types of cancer. Balch notes that certain herbs possess anti-cancer properties, including cardamom, cayenne, ginger, sage, thyme, rosemary and turmeric. Green tea possesses significant cancer-fighting compounds, and cat's claw is often prescribed for its ability to enhance immune function and treat tumors. The Chinese medicine herb Dang Gui Longhui Wan, which is actually a combination of many herbs, may control the division of cancer cells.
A Helpful Herb
Green tea is a helpful herbal remedy in the treatment of cancer. Green tea has powerful antioxidant action and helps reduce your chances of developing cancer. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine states that green tea may be effective for treating and preventing various cancers, including skin and breast cancers, but research results are mixed. Balch notes that green tea contains a small amount of caffeine and should not be used in large amounts by pregnant women or nursing mothers.
Warning
All herbal medicines should be used with a great deal of caution, as they may cause unexpected side effects in certain people. For example, green tea -- an herb commonly used to fight cancer -- may cause problems in people with anxiety disorders or cardiac arrhythmias. If you are unsure what side effects may arise when taking herbal medicines, ask your health care provider about herbs that are safe and effective for treating your ailment.
