You may think of dieting in a negative light, where you will be constantly starving and deprived of enjoyable foods. If you change your mindset and think of dieting in a positive light, it can help you achieve success. Once you've decided to diet, set yourself up for success.
Keep the Goal in Mind
Whether you goal is to lose weight, lower your cholesterol, improve your blood pressure, increase your mobility or fit in to certain pieces of clothing, it is valuable to set a goal and keep it in mind. Constantly reminding yourself of your goal will help you stay on track and avoid temptation. Possible goal reminders include weighing yourself daily, saving the clothing you want to fit into as a background on your computer or monitoring your blood pressure levels at home.
Eat Foods You Like
Pick a diet that includes foods you enjoy. While you may need to decrease certain foods, skipping them entirely can increase your risk of quitting the diet and not reaching your goals. Therefore, if you enjoy proteins, choose a protein-focused diet or if you enjoy grains and beans choose a plant-based diet, such as the Ornish diet.
Know the Temptations
Figure out which types of foods and conditions tempt you to overeat or eat unhealthy foods. You may be tempted by sweets and vending machines in the middle of the day, or you may find it hard to resist stopping by the drive-thru on your way home from work or you may be more likely to eat unhealthy when you are drinking alcohol. Whatever the cause of your temptations, by learning and acknowledging your them you can take steps to avoid their impact, such as taking a new route home or reducing your alcohol intake.
Diet Together
Make a plan to diet with your spouse, coworker, parent or roommate. Having someone to diet with can make it more enjoyable, increase the competition and help keep you motivated. If you live with someone, dieting together will help you stay on track, because you spouse or roommate will be less likely to eat tempting foods in front of you. Also, by dieting with someone else you can help keep each other motivated by being supportive and competitive at the same time. You can turn to your partner when you feel tempted to eat unhealthy foods or skip your exercise session.
