Joining a gym can greatly help you to achieve your fitness goals. Whether you’re looking to lose weight, get in better physical shape or train for something like a marathon, sticking with a regular exercise program requires discipline and dedication. A having a gym membership can help you to reach any of these goals and stay committed because it offers you a healthy and positive environment that contains all of the equipment and experts that you may need. However, not all gyms are created equal; research and tour several gyms in your area before making a decision.

Step 1

Compare the price of all of the gyms in your area or neighborhood to determine which are in your budget. Gym memberships can range from under $30 per month to well over $100 or $200; decide how much money you will be willing to spend on your membership.

Step 2

Inspect the cleanliness of all of the gyms that you are thinking about joining. Notice if the exercise machines are being wiped off after use by members or staff during the day, and check out the locker rooms and bathrooms to make sure they appear to be clean and tidy.

Step 3

Consider the amenities that you would like to enjoy at a gym. Think about whether you are looking for just a simple facility with cardio and weight machines or if you also want a yoga studio, indoor cycling studio, swimming pool, spa, lounge area and café.

Step 4

Check out the crowds during peak hours, such as early morning, lunchtime, immediately following work and Saturday mornings to see if you will be able to use the equipment and machines that you desire. Some gyms get overly crowded during peak hours, which can make it difficult for you to reach your fitness goals.

Step 5

Notice the type of people who are members at your gym to determine if the atmosphere will be to your liking. Observe if it is a friendly environment, or one where everyone keeps to themselves. Are they professionals or, possibly, body builders? Look around to see if there is an even mix of males and females.

Step 6

Review the gyms' schedules to see if they have the group exercise classes that you like and whether they are offered at times that are convenient for you.

Step 7

Inquire about the gym’s personal trainers, including prices, availability, education, certification and training; some gyms have higher standards than others when it comes to their fitness professionals.

Step 8

Ask for a free day or week-long trial so that you can experience everything that the gym has to offer for yourself.
