Diarrhea and stomach, or abdominal, pain are common gastrointestinal health problems. In some cases, these problems occur simultaneously, while in other cases, they may occur separately. MedlinePlus states that cramp-like abdominal pain may be caused by gas or bloating, and that it is often followed by diarrhea. Nutritional supplements have been prescribed by various health care practitioners -- including naturopathic physicians and medical doctors -- to help treat your diarrhea and stomach pain.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea is often a symptom of gastrointestinal infections caused by bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms. Infections that lead to diarrhea may be caused by drinking contaminated water or eating contaminated food. Microorganisms can also be spread between people due to poor hygiene. The World Health Organization defines diarrhea as the passage of three or more watery bowel movements per day. In some cases, diarrhea may be severe enough to be life-threatening. Diarrhea is particularly problematic in children and individuals who are undernourished or have compromised immune systems.

Stomach Pain

Stomach pain or discomfort can be caused by many conditions, both acute and chronic. Stomach pain, notes the Family Doctor website, may be caused by ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, appendicitis, ulcers, diverticulitis, pancreatitis, bowel obstruction, gallstones, gallbladder infection, kidney stones, kidney infection, bladder infection, inflammatory bowel diseases, constipation, gastroenteritis, gastritis and pelvic inflammatory disease. Many of these conditions require prompt medical attention and treatment to help resolve the cause of your stomach, or abdominal, pain and prevent further health problems.

Helpful Supplements

Numerous dietary supplements have been used to treat diarrhea and stomach pain. According to Phyllis A. Balch, a certified nutritional consultant and author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," helpful supplements for diarrhea include psyllium seeds, charcoal tablets, essential fatty acids, L-glutamine, potassium, garlic and a multi-enzyme complex with pancreatin. Some of the most helpful supplements for stomach pain are herbal supplements such as fennel, lemon balm, licorice, chamomile and peppermint.

Precautions

Nutritional supplements, although often effective if used appropriately, should not be used in lieu of other treatments suggested by your doctor. If you experience diarrhea and stomach pain -- especially if your symptoms are extreme or long-lasting -- visit your doctor as soon as possible. Your doctor can diagnose your condition, make relevant treatment recommendations and counsel you on the safe and effective use of nutritional supplements. Diarrhea and stomach pain may be caused by a serious underlying medical condition and may require immediate medical treatment.
