1. Treat the Common Cold
Pseudovent works as an expectorant to loosen phlegm and mucus in the throat, chest and nose. Generic forms of the drug include guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine. Many cough syrups, decongestants and flu treatments include Pseudovent as an ingredient. The drug improves symptoms of the common cold like a stuffy nose, cough and inflammation of the nose. Most doctors do not recommend Pseudovent for coughs or inflammation caused by smoking or asthma.
2. Avoid Cough Syrup Overdose
Many people who come down with a cold treat symptoms with over-the-counter medication. If your doctor prescribes Pseudovent, talk with him about all medications you currently take, including over-the-counter medications. A large portion of over-the-counter cold remedies use Pseudovent or a generic form as the expectorant in the medication. When you combine this amount with a prescription dose, you may accidentally overdose. An overdose may cause seizures, brain damage or death.
3. Don't Medicate Children
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents avoid using any cough medication for children under the age of 5. The warning includes cough medications specifically for infants, toddlers and children. Studies show the medications don't help treat the symptoms or cure the cause of the cold but do cause side effects that may lead to serious complications. Overmedicating may also result in death.
4. Know the Risks
Pseudovent may cause life-threatening side effects if you take it along with an MAO inhibitor like Marplan or Emsam. You need to allow a full 2 weeks between the time you stop taking an MAO inhibitor and begin treatment with Pseudovent. Allergies to other decongestants, diet pills or stimulants may indicate a higher risk of side effects or allergy to Pseudovent. Other high-risk factors include a family or medical history of heart disease, diabetes or thyroid disorders. Pregnant and nursing mothers should avoid taking the drug.
5. Choose Natural Cold Remedies
Does your grandma have a natural remedy she swears works better than medication? She may be right. Research shows that a bowl of chicken noodle soup helps people with colds feel better. Doctors recommend other natural remedies like saline washes, humidifiers and mentholated salve. Washing hands helps you avoid getting the cold or flu to begin with. Properly blowing your nose can eliminate loose mucus and prevent your nose from chapping. If you do get a cold, allow your body plenty of rest and increase your fluid intake to help wash away mucus and toxins.
