From crash diets to workout programs, there is a wide range of products and services trying to cash in on your desire to lose weight. But for all the gimmicks out there, some of the most effective weight-loss practices are the ones that are simplest --- and the least expensive. Jogging is a form of exercise that can be a part of a successful weight-loss plan when integrated into your lifestyle properly.

Exercise Effects

Exercise requires energy, and your body channels this in different ways depending on what type of exercise you are performing. When you perform aerobic exercise such as jogging, you prompt the body to tap your body's fat stores and break down these stored calories to use as fuel, according to the MotleyHealth website. This is what causes exercise to lead to weight loss --- the fat stores are used up through physical activity and are, ideally, not replaced through your diet.

Dietary Considerations

Jogging should be complemented by a healthy diet. Resist the urge to use your increased physical activity as an excuse to overeat --- focus on eating a reduced-calorie diet that creates a calorie deficit, causing you to burn more calories in a day than you consume. You should also try to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, which can help you feel full while keeping calorie intake low. Avoid fats and oils and drink plenty of water throughout your day.

Schedule

Jogging should be done at least three to four times a week, if not more --- the more you exercise, the more calories you will be burning. Because jogging is aerobic in nature, you should work out for at least 20 to 30 minutes consecutively. This may be difficult at first, but over time you will build endurance and find it easier to run for this length of time and longer. You may also improve your jogging pace over time as your body adapts to the new activity.

Considerations

Provided you are living a healthy lifestyle, jogging can help you lose weight. But the benefits of jogging must be balanced against other variables that affect weight loss --- if you are jogging daily but have also increased your eating, you will counteract the benefits of jogging and aren't likely to see any significant weight loss. Still, exercise is one of the most important factors in weight loss, and it can help you drop multiple pounds a week if the rest of your lifestyle is in check and working toward healthy weight loss. Consult your doctor before beginning any new exercise or diet regimen.
