Weight loss is a simple concept -- eat less than you burn in calories -- but a harder thing to do in real life. Staying motivated when you're trying to lose weight isn't easy when you pass by fast food restaurants on your way to work and the check-out line is filled with your favorite candy. Using a few simple tips to help keep you motivated will help make sure you stay on the path to weight-loss success.
Find a Support Network
Trying to accomplish a major goal all by yourself is rarely fun. That goes for weight loss, too. Whether it's a group of family members, friends or a paid weight-loss program, finding a group of people who support you in your goal -- or maybe even have the same goal -- can help keep you motivated. Just having someone to talk to about your struggles who understands what you're going through can help you through the rough days when you feel like cheating on your diet or don't feel like going to the gym. Explain to your family and friends why your weight-loss efforts are so important to your happiness.
Keep a Journal or Blog
Writing down your emotions and thoughts as you go through your weight-loss journey can help you externalize your feelings and get them out in the open so you're not chewing on them all the time. Writing about your successes allows you to go back and revisit them when you're feeling down about your progress. Starting a blog can help motivate other people and keep you accountable to your readers.
Write Down Your "Why"
Whether it's to feel better about yourself, to fit in that new pair of jeans or to be physically fit enough to run a marathon, everyone has different reasons to want to lose weight. Write a letter to yourself when you start your weight-loss journey that details your reasons for wanting to lose weight and encouraging yourself not to give up. Pull out the letter when you feel like giving up, and it will help provide you with motivation to keep going and not give up.
Schedule Meals and Workouts
Some people are natural planners, marking everything down in a calendar to make sure it gets done. Do the same thing for your weight loss. Write down in a calendar all the meals you'll eat for the next week, when you're going to exercise and what exercises you're going to do. Treat your weight-loss calendar the same as any other important appointments you have in your personal life or at work. Make them non-negotiable.
