Glucosamine and chondroitin are two supplements that have been used to help relieve symptoms of osteoarthritis, a condition in which cartilage breaks down and causes joint pain. Glucosamine and chondroitin are made in the body naturally to produce healthy cartilage, and as supplements they are used to promote cartilage health and aid in pain relief. Before using either of these compounds, ask your health care provider if they are appropriate and safe for you to consume.

Step 1

Follow the directions on the package if you are taking a mixture of glucosamine and chondroitin. These supplements are often combined together. Ask your doctor if she recommends any changes based on your condition to the dosage on the package.

Step 2

Consume 500 mg of glucosamine hydrochloride or glucosamine sulfate three times a day for 30 to 90 days, suggests the University of Maryland Medical Center. You can also do once daily dosing at 1.5 g. There are various kinds of glucosamine, but glucosamine hydrochloride may be easiest for your body to absorb. Studies have shown that while it is safe to take higher dosages of glucosamine, it does not increase its effectiveness.

Step 3

Consume 800 to 1,000 mg of chondroitin a day, recommends Drugs.com. This supplement has been shown to be better absorbed by the body when taken in multiple doses, rather than one large dose, so you may want to break up the dosing. This dosage has been successfully used for individuals with arthritis. The University of Maryland suggests taking either 400 mg of chondroitin three times a day or 600 mg twice a day. Consult with your health care provider about which dosing schedule is right for you. Positive effects typically take a few months to be noticeable.
