It is important in basketball to have standardized court dimensions, including the backboard. The National Basketball Association establishes the official dimensions for basketball backboards required in all regulation basketball games.
Backboard Dimensions
According to the NBA's rules, the backboard is required to be 6 feet wide and 3.5 feet tall. The surface of the backboard must be smooth and completely flat. There must also be a rectangle marked on the backboard, centered behind the rim. The rectangle is required to be 2 feet wide by 1 1/2 half feet tall. The rectangle must be 2 inches thick with the previous dimension measurements guiding the outside edge.
Rim And Net Measurements
The rim on the basketball backboard must be 18 inches in diameter. The upper face of the rim is also required to be exactly 10 feet from the ground. The distance from the backboard to the back of the rim should be 6 inches. The net can be between 15 to 18 inches in length, and must be between 30 and 120 thread-count.
Other Considerations
If the backboard is to be used in a regulation NBA match, it must be transparent, with a white rectangle. This is to allow spectators the ability to see through the board if sitting behind it. Balls used to play with regulation backboards should be inflated to between 7.5 to 8.5 lbs. per square inch.
Court Variations
The regulation NBA basketball court is 94 feet long by 50 feet wide. This length is often shortened to 84 feet for high school and college games.
