Congestion in the sinuses is not only uncomfortable, it can cause infections with long-lasting effects. Sinus problems may develop as a result of allergies, cold, flu or other viruses. Symptoms you experience can range from sneezing to discharge, postnasal drip and coughing. Herbal remedies may be helpful in reducing and relieving symptoms; however, herbs can cause side effects. Consult your practitioner before using unfamiliar herbs.
Sinupret
Sinupret is an herbal mixture combining several herbs used to relieve sinusitis. Along with helping sinuses to drain, Sinupret may relieve allergy symptoms contributing to sinus problems, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center. The herbs included in the Sinupret formula include cowslip, European vervain, sorrel and European elder. One or more of these herbs may also boost your immune system while clearing your sinuses.
Elderberry
Elderberry is a common herb used to relieve sinus problems and strengthen the immune system. It is especially noted for use for upper respiratory problems, including bacterial-based sinusitis, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center. It acts to relieve swollen nasal passage and reduce inflammation. Elderberry is reported to possess antiviral and antibacterial properties. It is best taken at the first sign of sinus problems. Elderberry comes in a liquid syrup and is made by several reputable manufacturers.
Fenugreek
Fenugreek dries out mucous membranes, halting mucus production and loosening tightness in the airways. It has astringent properties, notes "The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook," and may be helpful for relieving coughing and postnasal drip. In addition, it produces expectoration, releasing trapped mucus in the chest.
Honey and Black Pepper
An old folk remedy of honey and black pepper mixed together helps to break up blocked mucus in sinuses and the chest. The peppercorns are responsible for drying out mucous membranes, stopping the flow of excess mucus and preventing drainage. Mix a pinch of freshly ground black pepper with 2 tbsp. honey and sip as needed for relief from congestion. Adjust the amount of pepper to taste as you get used to it.
