If your students are learning their letters, doing activities that focus on each letter is an entertaining way to help them remember what sound each one makes and what each letter looks like. Including snacks in these lessons is another way to build letter recognition and encourage proper pronunciation of each letter. Several healthy snacks start with the letter "d" and will enhance your students' understanding.
Deviled Eggs
Eggs are a good source of protein, which provides energy. Deviled eggs include many different ingredients that add nutrition to the snack. Hard-boil several large eggs by bringing them to a boil, reducing heat and covering the pot. Cook for 10 or 15 minutes and cool completely. Slice each egg in half and carefully scoop the yolks into a bowl. Add 1/4 cup low-fat plain yogurt, 2 tbsp. chopped fresh sage and paprika. Combine the ingredients well, spoon the yolks back into the egg whites and sprinkle them with chopped chives.
Dip
Dip is an entertaining food for young children and it gives them the ability to control how much they eat. Dill dip made with low-fat plain yogurt supplies calcium and protein. Combine 1 cup of yogurt with 3 tbsp. of fresh dill. Add minced garlic and salt and pepper. Stir well. Serve the dip with fresh vegetables, such as broccoli, carrots and cauliflower. A sweet dip is another way to include calcium and protein in the snack. Combine 1 cup of low-fat vanilla yogurt with 2 tbsp. of creamy peanut butter, 2 tbsp. of honey and cinnamon. Serve with fruit, such as strawberries, bananas and cantaloupe.
Dried Fruit
Fruit is one of the most nutritious snacks you can offer children because it supplies several important vitamins and minerals. Dried fruit can be just as nutritious because it provides vitamin C and fiber. Serve a low-sugar variety. Dried fruit can be served on its own or added to other foods, such as popcorn, trail mix or dry breakfast cereal.
Dragon Fruit
Exotic dragon fruit is rich in vitamin C. This fruit has a bright pink outside with a creamy white inside. Dragon fruit has the texture of a pear and the tartness of a kiwi. Slice a dragon fruit into quarters and encourage children to scoop out the inside with a spoon. Another way to serve the fruit is to combine it with kiwi, mango and pineapple in a tropical fruit salad.
