A stability ball is a piece of exercise equipment that is often used during circuit training, Pilates, yoga and body ball classes. The advantages of using a stability ball during exercise include helping you develop core strength, improved posture and proper stretching.
Where to Purchase a Stability Ball
A stability ball can be purchased from any local retail store that carries fitness equipment or online from the comfort of your own home. The price of a stability ball depends on the brand and package, but most range from $16 to $60, as of February 2011. When you purchase a stability ball in a workout package; it usually comes with an instructional DVD and a hand pump, which can be more expensive than just purchasing an individual ball.
Knowing Which Size is Right For You
Because the ball comes deflated when you buy it, you must have a general idea of the correct ball size ball that you need based upon your body composition. Height is not the only factor to consider when determining ball size: weight is also important because of the flexibility and resistance that the stability ball offers. There are generally five diameters to choose from.
Stability Ball Sizes
Generally people under 4-foot-6 should use a 12-inch ball; those 4-foot-6 to 5 feet should use an 18-inch ball; those 5-foot-1 to 5-foot-7 should use a 22-inch ball; those 5-foot-8 to 6-foot-2 should use a 26-inch ball and those over 6-foot-2 should use a 30-inch ball. Once you're sitting upright on the inflated stability ball, you should be able to touch the ground with your feet flat on the floor.Your knees should have a 90-degree bend and be either level with or slightly lower than your pelvis.
Stability Ball Safety
Some balls may be considered anti-burst or burst resistant, which means that they can slowly deflate if they are punctured or torn. However, check the weight limitations on the package because it may say that it supports up to 1,000 lbs., but is only burst resistant up to 250 lbs. Try to avoid using the ball in areas that may puncture the ball or injure you if you fell on an object. Also, try to use the ball on a matted surface instead of a hard surface in case you lose your balance.
