Carbohydrates, both simple and complex, are converted to glucose inside your body. They are either used immediately as an energy source, or they are stored in your liver and muscles and used for energy later. Insulin is produced by the body to help stabilize blood glucose levels and, if they rise too high, hyperglycemia is the result; this is the case for those with diabetes. There are several methods you can use to help lower your body's glucose levels.
Step 1
Engage in physical activity. This is one of the most effective natural methods to help lower your body's blood sugar levels. Your body utilizes stored glycogen to fuel exercise, so aim for at least 30 minutes of walking, jogging, swimming and full body weight training most days of the week.
Step 2
Reduce the amount of simple carbohydrates you consume. These types of carbs are dispensed into the bloodstream more quickly than complex carbs, and this elevates your blood glucose levels. Pastries, cakes, cookies, donuts and candy bars are all examples of simple carbohydrates.
Step 3
Increase your fiber intake. Fiber is digested slowly which can stabilize blood sugar and keep you feeling satiated. Some high fiber foods include oat bran, oatmeal, apples, legumes and multi-grain breads.
Step 4
Eat small meals all day long. If you only eat two or three larger meals, you are likely to feel hunger pangs and possibly gorge on junk food. You can keep blood glucose levels from spiking, simply by combining an equal balance of protein, carbs and fats with every meal.
