Professional organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest that all American adults get at least 150 to 300 minutes of aerobic exercise every week. One common piece of equipment used to reach this goal is the treadmill. With an increase in fitness awareness, the market has become flooded with treadmill models ranging both in quality and price. However, there are certain aspects of a treadmill that you should particularly pay attention to when searching for the perfect model.
Stability
Before purchasing a treadmill, always try out the model you plan to buy. Stand on the treadmill and shake it back and forth, feeling for any instability. While walking or running on the treadmill, it should fell firm and steady. The side rails of the equipment should also be steady, and should be wide enough apart that you can swing your arms without hitting them.
Motor
Treadmills can come in various motor strengths. However, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends finding a model that has at least a continuous duty rating of 1.5 horsepower with motors in the 2.5 to 3.0 horsepower range being preferred. To test the strength of the motor, set the treadmill to its slowest speed and plant your foot firmly on the belt. A good motor should not produce a groaning sound or produce any hesitation while you try to hold your foot in place.
Belt
When looking at treadmills it's important to ensure the belt length and width are comfortable for your body size. Look for treadmills with belts that are at least 18 to 20 inches wide and 48 inches long. Buying a budget model with a smaller belt can increase your chances of tripping or falling off the back of the belt as you run.
Safety
Safety features are important when looking at treadmills, as they can make the difference between a few bruises or serious injury, especially if you have young children who may accidentally get hurt around the treadmill while you are on it. Always find a treadmill that at least has an emergency off switch, with emergency tethers or clips being an even better option.
Warranty and Maintenance
Look up the consumer reviews online regarding the model you plan to purchase. Check to see how often the models broke down for other consumers to gauge upkeep costs. Look for models that come with a warranty, or for more expensive models, consider purchasing additional coverage to protect your investment. Ask your sales representative about how much maintenance is needed on the model, as well as whether there are trained and experienced repair technicians in the local area who can fix the machine if anything goes wrong.
