Vitiligo is an acquired skin condition that causes irregular white patches and spots on the skin. It is most common on exposed areas of the face, hands and arms but can occur anywhere on the body. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that vitiligo affects the melanin cells in the epidermis layer of the skin and thus causes loss of pigment. The causes of this condition are thought to include fungal skin infections and autoimmune disorders. Tea tree oil may help slow or reverse the patches due to its anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and immune-stimulating properties. Consult a doctor before treating vitiligo; patients may require more than one type of treatment and care.
Step 1
Use a pure tea tree essential oil that does not contain additives or other perfumes to ensure that it is safe for the skin. Cleanse the skin with a non-irritating facial cleanser and pat dry gently. Massage a few drops of tea tree oil directly on the infected area or apply with a cotton swab. Let dry and protect the area from sun exposure. Repeat two to three times a day.
Step 2
Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with a carrier oil such as almond oil for more sensitive skin. Massage the mixture directly into and around the affected areas after cleansing and drying the skin. This helps moisturize and treat the skin. Repeat daily.
Step 3
Add a few drops of tea tree oil to your daily cleanser for added therapeutic benefits. Gently massage the cleanser into the skin, wash off with warm water, and pat dry with a clean towel. Repeat regularly as needed.
Step 4
Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with rosehip essential oil and lavender essential to make a potent anti-fungal and vitamin-rich healing skin treatment. Apply the essential oil mixture onto the areas of skin affected with vitiligo. Let dry and repeat daily.
Tips and Warnings
- To prevent transfer of skin fungal infections, wash towels and clothing regularly and do not share these items with others. Tea tree oil may also be used for other skin conditions such as acne. Also try adding a few drops of this oil to your body moisturizer for added protection and healing for the skin. Tea tree oil also have anti-viral and anti-bacterial qualities.
- Consult a doctor regarding the cause of your vitiligo before self-treating. Other causes of this skin disorder include pernicious anemia, hyperthyroidism, acquired immune deficiency disorders and Addison's disease. These causes require additional medical treatment. Protect the skin with clothing and a sunblock. Stress, trauma, injury and sunburns may trigger or aggravate vitiligo in susceptible people. Additionally do a small patch test with tea tree oil on the skin inside the elbow and wait 24 hours to confirm that you are not allergic to this essential oil.
